Councilman Cedrick A. Thomas
Councilman Cedrick A. Thomas represents Riviera Beach's District 3, the largest district in the city. He joined the City Council in April 2007 and served one year of his two-year term as its Chairman. Councilman Thomas was re-elected in April 2009.
He resigned the post in September 2009 but was re-elected in March 2010.
Councilman Thomas came to the City Council following a career on the city's police force, where he served for five years and learned much about the needs of city residents, especially the youngest residents.
Indeed, at age 29, Councilman Thomas was the youngest member ever elected to the dais in Riviera Beach, and has brought an abiding concern about the City's youth to the Council. He works closely with students and staff at several area schools and with the City's at-risk teen organization, the Youth Empowerment Program.
During his first year on the Council, Councilman Thomas pushed his Council colleagues to set aside $100,000 to help pay moving expenses for families being displaced from a low-income housing development. His primary concern: the effect of eviction and displacement on the children.
More recently, he gathered volunteers, especially those from the Kennedy High School Class of 1966, to commit to a long-term tutoring project at Kennedy. He himself attended Kennedy for junior high school.
On the dais, Councilman Thomas showed a knack for getting things done. He was instrumental in the awarding of nearly $4 million in federal stimulus dollars for a large city road project last year, and helped lead the drive for a new direction in the city's Community Redevelopment Agency and in its Utility District.
The Councilman studied at Arizona Western College, Northwood University and is a graduate of Indian River Community College's Police Academy. He is currently studying business administration at Northwood University with an anticipated graduation date of December 2011. He is employed as the director of code enforcement and compliance for the City of South Bay.
Councilman Thomas is a member of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials and the Young Elected Officials Network, a national organization of government leaders under age 35. In April, he became a proud brother of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
